History of Morocco Ch.23: Hassan II: The Years of Lead

«History of Morocco» series — Chapter 23 of 30

Hassan II: The Years of Lead

Hassan II took the throne on 3 March 1961 CE after his father's death and ruled 38 years (1961–1999 CE) — the longest continuous reign in contemporary Morocco after Ismail's. His era became known as the "Years of Lead": crushed opposition, secret prisons, exiles and the disappeared — a file whose wounds are still open.

Two coup attempts: 1971 and 1972 CE

On 10 July 1971 CE, officers led by Lt.-Col. M'hamed Ababou stormed the Skhirat palace during the King's 42nd birthday party — about 100 people were killed, and the plotters were executed. A year later, on 16 August 1972 CE, defense minister Mohammed Oufkir tried to shoot down the King's Boeing 727 with fighter jets over Tetouan — the King miraculously survived, Oufkir was killed in murky circumstances, and his children were imprisoned for 15 years.

Tazmamart: the secret prison

The secret prison of Tazmamart was built in the High Atlas (early 1980s) for the officers of the 1971 coup: underground solitary cells, no light, no ventilation — about half the inmates died there. Ahmed Marzouki, a survivor, exposed the horrors in his book Tazmamart: Cellule 10. In 1991 CE the prison was closed and the survivors released — the beginning of the thaw.

The thaw: the 1998 alternance government

In February 1998 CE Hassan II appointed the historic opposition leader Abderrahmane Youssoufi (USFP) as head of government — the "alternance": the Arab world's first peaceful democratic transfer of power. Hassan II died on 23 July 1999 CE; his son Mohammed VI succeeded him and opened the reconciliation file through the Equity and Reconciliation Commission. But before that, Hassan II had fought Morocco's great battle: the Sahara — the story of the Green March, in the next chapter.

Dates to remember:
3 March 1961 CE: Hassan II takes the throne | 1961–1999 CE: 38 years of rule | 10 July 1971 CE: Skhirat coup attempt (Ababou; ~100 dead) | 16 August 1972 CE: Oufkir's attempt — shooting down the King's plane | early 1980s CE: secret Tazmamart prison | 1991 CE: Tazmamart closed | February 1998 CE: alternance government (Youssoufi) | 23 July 1999 CE: death of Hassan II
